Obon Yumeji

お盆夢路

by Peter Strong

The red headed woman sat up in her bed panting for breath, her body covered in sweat.

She looked out at the endless expanse of glitering lights. Tokyo swealtered in the late summer heat but in her climate controlled apartment high above those streets, chills wracked her body. The tears started to flow down her cheeks as she sobs quietly to her self.

It was that dream again.

Tenjin Sadayuki, the man who haunted her dreams was dead. He had sacrificed himself to protect the woman he loved. He believed he was cursed and the woman he madly adored would die if they stayed together and that the same curse would be passed on to future generations of his blood.

To Sadayuki, it was a rational curse and that his death the only way to break it.

Did she believe in the curse, that didn't matter but the one thing she did know with every fibre of her being was that even though he was dead Sadayuki was in trouble.

That was what those horrible nightmares were telling her. She was Japanese and she knew that the dead ruled over the living, the history of her country was filled with records of the dead needing to be placated.

The one thing she did not know was how she could help him but she did know people who just might.
