Alternate Worlds Card Games

The following CCGs are sponsored jointly by Alternate Worlds and the games’ manufacturers. Players can come for one day and play only card games, or can combine trading card games with roleplaying, miniatures, freeforms and other Convention activities.

All tournament times are 9 am - 6.30 pm.

Highlander CCG - There can only be one.

Highlander is a game of swashbuckling sword fighting. The Gathering is near. The time when all immortals fight for the ultimate prize, the Quickening, to the death.

This will be an official sanctioned tournament. Nexus members will get a world ranking. (Players may join Nexus at the tournament). This tournament deck will consist of one starter deck with two boosters,. Players must purchase the decks/cards at the tournament (at discount) to ensure no card substitution. Player make their deck up from these cards. Once a deck is constructed there will be no substitutions. (ie. no sideboard). All entrants will receive a special promotional card. The top five players will win special limited promotional cards. Prizes will also include gift vouchers from the sponsor Alternate Worlds in conjunction with Thunder Castle Games.

The Arcanacon open Highlander tournament is the Australian National championship. Players who have qualified are eligible to play in this tournament. There are four regional qualifying tournaments held between March and July, contact Alternate Worlds for details. If there are any ‘unoccupied’ slots in the Australian championship, anyone may enter. The sealed deck tournament held a few days earlier will act as a qualifying round in that case. Note: once a player has qualified for the Australian championship (top four players in each qualifier), the qualifying position goes to the next place getting. In this way it is possible that even if you come last (16th) you may still qualify for the Australian championship. National winners qualify for the World championships. Top prize for the national champion is a Katana sword and a place in the world championships at Gencon in August.

The tournaments are a double elimination system. Each player can lose one game and still be in the running, unless you lose your head, then you are out. The last two left standing, fight for the prize. Each tournament runs for 30 minutes. Ties after time expires are determined by first blood.

Demo games will be played before and after the Tournament.

Star Wars - May the Force be with You!

Star Wars is a SF game where the rebels and the empire manipulate characters, resources and events to drain the other of their force. (deck).

Star Wars is a sanctioned tournament, where players gain a world ranking. Each player must construct two decks (light & dark), each deck must be 60 cards. Standard rules and FAQ’s apply. The tournament is a Swiss style tournament where 8 rounds are played. The player with the most wins (and force if tied) is the winner. Individual games last 45 minutes.

Promo cards will be given to all entrants, in addition to prizes and certificates. Prizes from Decipher and Alternate Worlds will be given to the top 4 players.

Regional and Australian National championships are held each year. The winners of the two Australian regional championships qualify to play in the world championships and are flown to the US to complete.

Demo games will be played before and after the tournament.

Mythos CCG - The Nightmare begins when you wake up!

Mythos is a game of supernatural horror set in the universe of H.P. Lovecraft of the 1920’s. Unsuspecting people become tangled in the horror of the Elder Gods and their insane influence. Players attempt to complete adventures (usually proving the existence of these creatures), before they are driven insane by their opponents.

Mythos will be a sanctioned tournament, where player get a world ranking. In the sealed deck tournament, decks will consist of one starter deck and two packets. Players must purchase the decks/cards at the tournament (at discount) to ensure no card substitution. players make up their deck from these cards. Once the deck is constructed their will be no substitutions. (ie. no sideboard).

The open tournament can consist of any Mythos cards, minimum deck size is 52 cards with a minimum of 20 points of adventures.

Prizes will also include gift vouchers from the sponsor Alternate Worlds in conjunction with Chaosium Games and certificates. All players will get a World ranking. The Australian championships will be held later this year. Winners are also eligible to play in the World championships.

The tournaments will be played in three rounds of 50 minutes each with 4 players in each round. Each player scores points based on their sanity/adventure total, plus bonus points for position (1st, 2nd & 3rd). The highest scoring players after three rounds will play off in the final game. The final game has no time limit.

Guardians - Welcome to the True Past!

Guardians is a game of fantasy where players assume the role of a Guardian (a god-like creature), vying for control of the planet’s terrain. This CCG is a cross between a regular card game and a tactical board game. Not only do players construct decks, but when players assemble their forces, they manoeuvre around the ‘game field’. This is a unique aspect to a card game as numerous battles may be fought over and over with multiple forces for the same area. Players can win by one of three victory conditions: control six of the disputed land terrain; capture five of your opponents’ shields; or destroy your opponent’s guardian.

Guardians is a sealed deck tournament, consisting of one starter deck and two booster packets. Players must purchase their decks at the tournament (at discount) to ensure no card substitution. Players make up their deck from these cards. once the deck is constructed, their will be no substitutions (ie. no sideboard). Individual games last 45 minutes. Standard rules and FAQ’s apply. Minimum deck size is 52 cards (no maximum). No card restriction.

This is a sanctioned tournament where player gain a world ranking. Regional and national championships will be held later this year. Prizes include certificates and cards from Alternate Worlds and FPG. Note: Australian championship winner will receive one of every product that FPG have ever produced, CCG, Trading Cards and books.!.

Various demonstration games will be played at Arcanacon, including the various tournaments sponsored by Alternate Worlds. Keep an eye for these at the convention for specific details of what and when.

Session times: Throughout the convention schedule from Thursday to Sunday, most 3 hour blocks.

Legal sets are 5th edition, Alliances, Mirage, Visions, Homeland and Ice Age.

Note: if you intend to play in the dragon flight tournament then you must send a stamped self addressed envelope to the organisers to obtain an additional rules sheet and list of banned cards.

1st Prize - Set of Visage djinns and efreets plus boosters

You will select cards from single boosters each of Mirage, Visions and Weatherlight which will be provided according to the standard booster draft rules.

You must bring along sufficient basic land to construct a deck of 40 cards minimum with a 15 card sideboard.

Standard Mirage rules will apply for all tournaments.

You must register with the Arcanacon convention before presenting for any of these tournaments.

For each of the tournaments we will commence playing or drafting boosters 15 minutes into the session at the start of the session you must notify the organisers of your intention to play in the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded following the completion of the final round of each tournament.
