Formula DeThis car has two speeds, 'Hold on tight' and 'What was that?'ZOOOOOOOOOM! Formula De is, oddly enough, a Formula One racing game in board form. Very easy to play and first time friendly. All equipment provided for the game but players should probably bring a pencil and a need for speed. It's been found that this is a good con wind-down game One race per session but we might manage two dependant on speed of play. Open BoardgamingArcanacon is pleased to announce a new space for Open Boardgaming. Throughout the convention we will dedicate a quiet room, with ample tables and chairs. Please bring any and all boardgames, wargames, miniatures rules or cardgames for friendly play in a congenial venue. This is not a tournament - no prizes will be awarded - but an open gaming space available throughout the convention. Arrangements Open Boardgaming is Bring-Your-Own. Arcanacon is not providing referees or staff to teach games. Nor will we hold any of the other events in the Boardgaming Room. We hope participants will welcome new players and encourage ad hoc gaming, but no one will be required to do anything they do not want to do. We hope players will informally arrange games in advance, agreeing to meet and play on site. Opening Times Open Boardgaming will be available from 1.00pm until 10.30pm Saturday, 9.00am until 10.30pm Sunday and Monday, 9.00am until 6.00pm Tuesday. After hours the room will be locked. Participants are welcome to leave games in the room overnight, you may decide to leave games set-up to be resumed the next day: but Arcanacon takes no responsibility for games or other possessions which are left on site. We request that games are not left unattended for prolonged periods during the day, as the space might be needed by other players. Cost Sadly, until we find a sponsor, Arcanacon must charge a fee to cover our costs. Open Boardgaming is available for $6 per day, or free for anyone who is registered for 7 or more sessions at the convention. We have tried to make this fee as low as possible, and are keen to hear your feedback. SponsorsArcanacon is seeking a Sponsor for Open Boardgaming Red Dragon InnThe Adventure's Over, the Party's Just Getting StartedThe Red Dragon was crowded tonight thought the Barmaid; one group was especially loud tonight... Gerki the Sneak dumped his drink in the floor... Zot the Wizard leapt to grab Pooky as his familiar jumped at Deirdre the Priestess and yelled 'No Pooky, that's my friend!' Almost ignoring the threat Deidre passed her Dragon's Breath Ale to Fiona the Volatile 'You look like you need this more than I do' Fiona looked at it, 'This is just the thing to get the rust off my armor!' dabbing it on her shoulder joint. Turning to Eve she said 'We're at an inn and you're not drinking? What's wrong with you?' and pushed a drink toward the Illusionist. 'Drink what? This is empty!' she replied before turning to Fleck the Bard, 'Tip the Wench?' With a big smile Fleck he responded 'I don't think so!' Turning to Dimli he said 'This is in payment for that heroic ballad I wrote about you!' nicking two gold away from in front of the dwarf. Grouching the dwarf looked from the bard to the half-ogre and his drink, settling on Gog the beast he pushed his drink toward him 'You have this; I'm waiting for the good stuff!' Gog, drunk off his considerable feet slammed back the drink, looked at everyone and yelled 'Gog loves everyone' enveloping the entire table into his arms, their responses were muffled by armpits... The Barmaid shook her head... just another night at the Red Dragon Inn... Red Dragon Inn is a card game where players try to get each other drunk, beaten up or both. Easy to pick up and fun to play. Play one or both sessions, not so much the last one standing as the last one able to keep their heads above the table even if the rest is slumping toward the floor! I have limited sets so player numbers will be set, BYO encouraged. A Montgomery Family Christmas25th December, 1921, Caermayne Guesthouse, Cornwall Caermayne sits on a hillside overlooking the village Penwarne. For many years, or centuries, for millenia, perhaps, it has been the home of the Tremayne family. It is an impressive manor house. You might think it in the Regency style, and you might be right, but you might be wrong too. There are many strange stories about this house. The family were wealthy not so long ago, but the current owner could not keep up the house, it was converted to a guesthouse some years ago. A great shame, no? It is Christmas Day. A feast awaits the guests. I might even attend, though I do not want them in my house. Even a ghost can enjoy Christmas. A Montgomery Family Christmas is the sixth game in the The Stratigraphy of Shadows series. No knowledge of previous games is required to play. By a Dark RiverFar below the world in which mortal men dwell, beyond the World-River and the sunset, in a cavern so large no eye may make out roof or wall, lies a land of gloom and mist unending. Here, guided by Hermes' hand, come the shades of the dead to wander the shores, 'til Charon the ferryman comes to carry them o'er the Stream of Woe to Hades' realm. At this land's farthest reach, there is a place where the Acheron flows into the Styx. There no mortal man nor shade nor child of Zeus himself may press on unaided, and so gather there wanderers to rest and wait by a bloodied pit under the flickering red light of distant fire. None has ever gone farther than these travelers upon their own feet. What drives them to walk so far, to stand on the bank and search the darkness? What destinations draw them on? And who shall they meet, to become companions or enemies upon their journeys yet to come? A chance meeting of 22 heroes, shades and other wayfarers waiting for their travels to continue. This game has previously been run at Phenomenon 2009. Death of a Secret IdentityIn 1992, the world mourned the loss of its greatest hero. The funeral of Champion, dead of unknown causes, was attended by millions, watched by billions, and the consequences of his passing will continue for years. Three months later, on a spring Sunday, a small group gather to bury Trent Tucker, a mild-mannered art dealer. Taken suddenly at a young age, Trent is survived by his widow, his father, and many friends and associates. F.A.R.T.S.F.A.R.T.S. - The Society & A Primer There exist, on the fringes of our society, a great many secret societies. These range from the inner circle of the Masons to even more bizarre sects, such as comic book collectors, Christian scientists or role-players. 'F.A.R.T.S' - The Fraternity of Alternate Reality Theoreticians and Scientists is one such organisation. F.A.R.T.S has existed since approximately the beginning of the nineteenth century, and was founded by Isaac Newton himself, who had faked his own death some years earlier to pursue a career in the burgeoning area of Weird Science. F.A.R.T.S has boasted among its ranks many odd scientists. It has thumbed its nose at the more stayed and normal scientists (like Einstein, or Hawking) in favour of scientists with real areas of research. These areas include such things as 'Grand Unified String Theory' and 'Clockwork Spacecraft Construction using Soft Vegetables.' Never has there been a more bizarre collection of prophets, maniacs and geniuses. Every year, a new chairperson is elected in F.A.R.T.S. Generally, this person has no real duties, although the position is one of great prestige among the members of the Fraternity. The way to become the Chairperson is simple. One must be elected at the yearly F.A.R.T.S get-together, as the scientist with the most ground-breaking and (more importantly) impressive sounding area of research, invention, or new principle. For example, Dr. Edgar Lewis, Chairperson of F.A.R.T.S for 1967 put forward an annual proposal for 'Tachyon Based Deodorant' for mass consumption. Sadly, no commercial company ever took on the idea, but this was probably as well since the deodorant in question was found to dye human skin indelibly green. As a game, 'Weird Science' concerns itself with the events of the 1998 F.A.R.T.S meeting. Each player plays the part of a weird scientist, trying desperately to bring details of his/her invention to the members of the Fraternity and become Chairperson for the coming year. Character selection will be available at Pryortodeath.livejournal.com approximately one month before Arcanacon. Presented by Uncle Dunkle as a Fractal Snowflake Presentation. Planet of the BollywoodsIt's 1898, Queen Victoria's mighty Empire covers the entire globe and it's only a matter of time before those pesky few Frenchies left resisting in Borneo are taught their proper place. The Royal Society's boffins have sent their steam powered rockets to the moon and with expeditions to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn well underway, it's time for a valiant explorer to take up the next challenge and travel to the stars, bringing the enlightenment only Her Majesty's glorious civilisation can. A small wooden rocket takes off, crewed by a few intrepid souls sets off into the inky blackness of night, towards a distant star. Later, on the Planet Of The Bollywoods! The monsoon season is late this year. The threat of war between the nations of Biharhi and Uttarakhandspikh grows as skirmishes along the border begin to escalate and troops begin to mobilise. The Maharajah has announced that if the rains do not come soon, he will be forced to sacrifice his only daughter to appease the gods and hopefully end the drought. First though, a night of feasting to try and appease Indra (God of the Rains), Ganesha (God of Wisdom) and Lakshmi (Goddess of Fertility), that they might smile once more on the land. But! Strangers, with pale skin and odd clothing have arrived in a fantastic wooden fish they claim swims between the stars. Can these strangers save the Princess' life? Will romance flourish? Can war be averted? Is there going to be a lot of water?

But what happens when you lock four maids, four butlers, three detectives, two foils and a sweet old lady in the same room for two and a half hours? The Pico VaultHigh above the planet Earth, a shadow crosses the surface of the moon. A massive Battle Cruiser, poised in the void, eyeing the planet below with a greedy gaze. The commander stands motionless on the bridge, alternating lights on the console casting colour on his face in cycles. Another figure comes up alongside him, taking in the view of the blue planet below.
"Everything is ready commander," said the newcomer. Theme Music: Doctor Who The Pico VaultAn alien invasion fleet is headed towards the Earth and the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) has gathered together a think tank of experts to decide how to repel this intergalactic threat. At the centre of the debate is the enigmatic Pico Vault, a Pandora's Box of looted Alien treasures, there's only one problem; no one is exactly sure what's in there. To throw another spanner in the works, the Doctor, a mysterious UNIT Extraterrestrial Liaison, has delivered several of his "Companions" with the insistence that they be included in the think tank. Each character in Living Forgotten Realms comes from a region in the world of Abeir-Toril - a place they can call home. The region you select for your character may define some of your roleplaying elements - how the character feels about the world, what kinds of clothes the character wears, and even the character's reason for adventuring. In addition, being a part of a region gives you a game benefit for selecting that background. Once you're off on grand adventures, you might also find that playing your region's adventures might give you an edge over travelers from other lands from time to time!
Visit www.rpga.com for details of character creation, LFR regions (Australia is in the Dragon Coast region), and for any information on the RPGA and Living Forgotten Realms. Once at the con and before the session starts, you'll need to speak to the organisers of the Living Game you want to play, to organise who you'll be playing with, and what game you'll be playing.
If you can't organise a game for a session, we'll be happy to organise a refund for you. Just get a Living organiser to sign on your registration sheet and bring it to the registration desk. Sponsored by |

A 7th Sea multiform set in the era of the 1880's
where exploration, science and heroism go hand in hand.
Which dastardly fiend strangled that dapper German diamond re-seller on the airship Jollygoods? And why not use an aether pistol? Tally ho, its off to solve the mystery above London in 1884, but beware the weird science experiments of Jan Snoots. And the French woman. And the butler. Oh goodness me, is that leaking gas I hear?
The fog was thick that October afternoon in London, and the steam airships had to navigate by ethereal reflections. It is 1880, a time of great scientific progress and discovery. The Royal Academy of Science has been discussing many amazing scientific breakthroughs, but today's talk by Sir. Reginald Snoots has been a disaster, for he never showed up to speak on "A tremendous breakthrough in ethereal travel". A smashing good time for 4-6 intrepid crime-solvers, but beware the zombies, oh and steam-guns, oh and did I mention the butler. Steampunk/neo-Victorian genre, much fun.

The Classic Games Workshop Game is Back!
To celebrate the re-release of this classic game a Space Hulk tournament will be run using the new rule set at Arcanacon.
Players will play missions from the rulebook, playing each mission twice; once as the terminators and once as the genestealers. The number of rounds will be decided once there is a good sense of how long each mission will take (most likely 3-5, so you will get 6-10 games in).
Victory will solely be decided on mission points. Unlike other tournaments there will be no painting or sportsmanship component to the rankings.
Players are requested to bring their own copy of Space Hulk, but it is not required that they do so. If you bring a copy you will guarantee entry for yourself into the tournament. Also if you do so you may nominate a friend without a set who will be allowed to play. If you do not bring a set and are not a nominated friend there is a chance you will not be able to play.
When you enter, please email me to let me know if you can supply a copy, or if you are a nominated friend.
As is normal for miniature tournaments in Melbourne discussion will be held on Wargamer AU.

After the success of last year's After-Con Celebration, we have arranged to return to Smith St for dinner and drinks at a local hotel. Please join us after the prize presentations at The British Crown Hotel, 14-18 Smith St (Corner Mason St). This is 100m from Victoria Pde, on the "Collingwood" side of Smith St.
The British Crown has been recently restored and has a great beer garden. We have booked-out the dining room, and there is plenty of extra space if we need it. Meals start from $10, with main courses averaging $15 and good vegetarian options. The bar has a fine selection of beer on tap and an extensive wine list.
Leaving no stone unturned, your faithful con-orgs have tried-out The British Crown (the sacrifice! the selfless care we show you!) and we are eager to go back again. Come with us ;-)
We were very happy with the venue we had last year - sadly, that pub has new management and they have redesigned the building! There's not enough room!
If you are old enough to know what the title refers to, self-identify as a geek, nerd, or theramin aficionado, or have nothing better to do on Sunday night of the Con, then this Quiz is for you!!!
This part-trivia, part-quiz show, part-improv session will get your scientific juices flowing, and who knows, you may even pick up a thing or two*.
Come as you are, with friends, or without, and join the mayhem that will ensue. Definitely no adult content, toxic chemicals or genetic modification in this event.
Sponsored by a major pharmaceutical company (tbc), this event even has some "Fabulous Prizes" provided by Madman Entertainment. Pre register for a complimentary beverage!

from Magnum Opus Press and Mongoose Publishing.
Sponsored by Magnum Opus Press.
Five individuals brought together by a sixth for a purpose. However, before introductions can even be exchanged an explosion rips through the building and the sixth, the one who knew what was happening, is lost.
Standing now in the remains of the burnt out building, what do you do?
Five is a systemless tabletop for 5 individuals who stand between humanity and the darkness.
Previously run at Unicon 2008.
Bavaria needs people who are willing to advance her knowledge, Giovanni Medici has a Scientific device and some adventurous types are needed to test this new, peaceful Scientific device, there is a high amount of metal in the device so may be unsuitable for a Fae person and a certain amount of Crampedness is expected so it may be uncomfortable for Draconic persons. It is a Travel Device and nothing can go wrong!
In these dark times, there are few who have what it takes to stand up and help make the world a better place. Science is dying out, with fewer people being willing to test what they think they know in an effort to improve their lives, and the lives of others. But it is not dead yet, for you are one of the glorious scientists, ready to usher mankind into a new age!
Unfortunately, what with this being the 41st Millennium, this makes you a heretic, and so you will be pursued by the glorious Imperium of the Immortal God-Emperor of Mankind to the ends of the universe if need be.
So not only is it your job to educate and help people, but you must educate and help them whether they like it or not, and still survive.
Good luck.
A largely systemless game set in the world of Warhammer 40,000
that takes the point of view of some of the innocent "heretics".
A very basic system exists for handling fights.
It is the year 1855. Tensions are running high. The subject of slavery is a touchy one at the moment, with states glaring at each other over the practice. Science is starting to progress further than ever before. Human rights is a subject of much contention. The shadows of a coming war are hanging over everyone.

It is almost time to turn the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) or Large Hamster Collider as it is known to the team on. The science world is watching, the media is watching, the Seers are watching, and your mum is watching. How wrong can things truly go? After all... isn't there a fate mage in the party?
Come join Sparks and Fractal Snowflake for a foray into the NWoD Mage venue in Large Hamster Collider, a game for up to 8 players.
"So, what you're saying, right, is all we have to do, is get in, pick up these signed Troll Dolls, whatever they are, an' then sit in the pub until this geezer turns up with the dosh?"

"An' they don't have any security."
"Dangling your bollocks in a tank o' piranhas is safer than these things are."
"An' you'll give us five grand a piece."
"Gordon Bennett! Do you want the bloody job or not?"
"Yeah, yeah, sure. Keep your knickers on. We'll do it."
"Good. See you Friday."

It was by popular opinion that the late addition of Labouchere's Amendment to the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 (Sec. 11) seemed rushed, and was questioned whether had anything to do with the original intent of the bill.
William Stead's revelations on common social matters were almost completely ignored during Gladstone's June Budget fiasco, however the Armstrong Case caused such uproar that it prompted Parliament to resume debate over the Act in July.
The final version was passed with amendments in August 1885; the discussion for tonight's social gathering will be whether the introduction of the bill has had any noticeable effect within the last four years.
Some problems simply cannot be solved with debate, drastic measures must be taken to preserve the sanctity of Britain.
