Tonight

by Travis Hall with Nick Argall and Random Jones

It’s cold on the streets tonight. The rain has stopped for now, but it’ll be back just as soon as wind-chill has done its work. Nobody walks Melbourne’s streets on a night like this, not if they have a choice.

Yet some don’t. We hide from the killing cold as best we can, making our way through a world as empty as loneliness, as despair.

Hope will return, in the morning. The pale sun will bring a little warmth, humanity with jangling change will reclaim the streets, and the workers in the welfare office might seek some excuse to mark a client as eligible for assistance. During the day, there’s at least the chance of finding work that will turn a life around, or a relative come looking for the lost.

Not now. Things won’t get better tonight. That slim hope lies beyond nine more hours of darkness. If we can keep warm. If we can endure the emptiness.

If we can just get through tonight.
