It is the beginning of the 18th Century. Forces of the powers of Europe
ply the seven seas, bringing back riches from the new world, tradegoods
from the mysterious East, and tales of peculiar lands and their strange
peoples beyond the treacherous Horn. It is truly a time for swashbuckling,
exploration and adventure, for the rapid flashing of blades and the
heaving of bosoms -
a time ripe for plunder by the
rogues of Arcanacon XXIV!
At the heart of every roleplaying game is an adventure - the characters
set off to experience something new, to explore a new
situation or take advantage of a new oppurtunity.
But in many of these games, the characters are forced into the
roles of heroes - the adventure comes to them, forcing them from
the simple, safe life and into the limelight of the story.
Arcanacon XXIV is intended to be a celebration of the opposite -
of the characters who step out of their door and find adventure
rather than letting it come to them. We want to highlight the
genres where the characters joyfully head out to explore new lands;
especially those where the quintessential hero is the swashbuckler,
the quick-witted and quick-bladed agile adventurer; romantic
and dashing with a soft heart for the downtrodden.
And although many games could be descibed as adventuresome, some
suit the genre better than others - 7th Sea immediately leaps
to mind as the penultimate swashbuckling and adventure game of the
current era, but there is also Castle Falkenstein, Lace
and Steel and Albedo, all of which encourage a pop-culture-like
swashbuckling theme.
Adventuring is also the core of games like D&D and Exalted -
they encourage a style of play where the protagonists leave the boring
life behind and deliberately set out to find excitement in lands far from
home.
So join us for Arrrcanacon XXIV,
and help us celebrate the life of the Adventurer!
