An almost-secret-society, the Lunar Society was a collection of scientists, inventors and natural philosophers dedicated to improving the conditions of the common man through the practical application of science.

China is a land of great mystery and superstition, facts were in thin supply, the word that kept appearing in reports was 'magic'.

Eventually word made its way around the world back to the court of Queen Victoria, some unknown force was wreaking destruction across great swathes of China, seriously disrupting trade and affecting relations with the Qing Emperor.

Unsure what else to do, the Foreign Office petitioned the Lunar Society to send a team to investigate, escorted by a Commander from Her Majesty's Navy.

On a warm May evening in 1898, a ship gently docked in Hong Kong harbour, the first step of an unexpected journey into the unknown.
