Hello again. Have you had a nice rest? Its been six months now since Arcanacon XX and we're feeling all fired up for Syd's 21st birthday.
Arcanacon XXI is beginning to take shape now, and we're hoping that you'll all come to the party, so to speak.
Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear Syd, Happy birthday to you
2003 is the 21st Arcanacon, and we're throwing Syd a party. Ever since Arcanacon '83, the Arcanasaur has been a patron of the Convention. On numerous occasions, Syd has even deigned to grace us with his physical presence in the form of a huge fibreglass version of him which people can climb inside.
So grab your best party frock or your favourite game system, prepare your stomach for fairy bread and camel rides, and come help us celebrate this milestone in the life of Arcanacon.
In recognition of this most auspicious and special year, the theme for Arcanacon XXI is 'Anniversaries, Birthdays and Celebrations', so we are looking for games which have a connection to Time, and to the marking of its passage.
Birthdays, festivals, coronations, seasons, anniversaries, prophecies, harvests, inaugurations and celebrations are the sorts of special events which would be part of the Arcanacon theme for 2003.
Almost any genre you care to mention could complement this theme - modern horror ("The stars are right!"), fantasy ("The princess will fall into a deep sleep on her 16th birthday") or science fiction ("It has been 1000 years since the darkness was driven back by the forces of light").
If you want to write for Arcanacon XXI, we need your blurb by the 10th of October at the latest - and earlier is better! We're looking for about 30 or so events for the convention, themed and non-themed.
If you want to write, but don't quite have the blurb down yet, let us know anyway. You can fill in the form on our website and give us a rough idea of what you want to run and all, and we can make sure you know exactly what's happening with Arcanacon as the year progresses. This also helps us out because it lets us know ahead of time what sort of spread of events we'll have for 2003, and can let people know if we're missing any type of genre or event.
While Arcanacon is primarily a roleplaying convention, we do have room for a couple of non-rpg events, so if you have ideas, let us know.
Check the list at http://www.arcanacon.org/2003/events/planned.html to see which games have been offered to the Con already. Any questions or queries? You can email the Organisers at arcanacon@vurt.net and we'll endeavour to help you out.
If you want to be kept up to date with ongoing Arcanacon information, we have an announcements mailing lists. Information is sent to this list about upcoming events, reminders for closing dates, and any updates to the set of events to be run. Sure, you can read aus.games.roleplay or remember to check our website, but nothing beats the convenience of having the information dropped right in your lap.
To subscribe, go to http://vurt.net/mailman/listinfo/arc-announce. We promise to neither give your address away, or spam you with too much repeat info.
Did you know: that since Arcanacon X in 1992, the Get-Wrecked price for Arcanacon has been about $50?
In that time we've had the loverly GST, massive increases in public liability insurance and so on. Unfortunately, we can't really absorb any more costs without a price hike. So for 2003 we are going to have to raise the price for Arcanacon.
Being the rip-the-bandaid-off style folks that we are, we've decided to increase the price of rego and each session to $6, and to up the Get-Wrecked to $60. This increase will help the convention keep going over the next ten years.
Next to the length of prizegiving, this is probably one of the more contentious topics regarding Cons, so we would like your feedback about the price increase - let us know what you think.
Mind Games City are the lovely sponsors of our ArcCard, the fine reward for those folks who wrote, ran or did that whole get-wrecked thing at Arcanacon this year.
Mind Games will return to Arcanacon for our 21st birthday, both as sponsors for the ArcCard, and also as purveyors of fine merchandise at the Convention.
If you can't wait that long, you can find them at 244-248 Swanston St, where they have a selection of roleplaying and other games available, or you can go to their website at http://www.mindgames.com.au/.
The Arcanacon website is full of goodies and it just gets bigger and better as we get nearer the convention - upcoming events, news, general information about the convention, blurbs and online rego are just the beginning. Go there now!
