As the dying sun sank below the horizon, the last of its rays turned the ancient, pitted bricks a fiery crimson red.
Deep inside the freshly dug tunnel, the air was heavy with the smell of dust, and sweaty, tired bodies in a confined space.
As the last of the light faded, so to did the sounds from the surrounding jungle, to an uneasy hush.
Within the tunnel, oblivious to the lack of noise outside, the final layer of clay crumbled beneath blunted shovels. In the flickering lamplight, the gleam of the gold still shone with dazzling brilliance after eons locked away, drawing them in deeper.
